What quietly kills budgets
- Helicopter or sky-bird island tours — can run ₱30,000+ for an hour. Beautiful, but priced like Manila.
- Cocktails on the strip — ₱250–400 each. Three rounds for two people = a hostel night.
- Daily smoothie bowls — ₱350–500 each. Seductive, repeats fast.
- Repeat scooter accidents — deductibles range ₱3,000–10,000. Wear shoes and a helmet that actually closes.
- Forgetting cash — one ATM in town with high fees. Bring 50–70% of your budget in cash from the mainland.
What’s actually free
- Magpupungko rock pools at low tide (~₱100 entrance, but the experience is free)
- Sunset at Cloud 9 viewing tower
- Most beaches — there are no private-beach gates here
- Scooter loops through the rice fields toward Burgos
- Free-diving with friends (vs. paid tours)
How to stretch any budget further
- Stay 14+ nights and ask for a long-stay discount — most hosts offer 20–30% off.
- Travel May–July to get peak-season weather at shoulder prices.
- Eat one daily meal at a carenderia (₱100–150 vs. ₱400 at tourist places).
- Rent a scooter weekly, not daily — saves about 25%.
